The Ordos

Interview With A Spectre

GM:
This room, which was tiled in white before mould and decay yellowed them, reeks of untold crimes. Black stains speckle the floor and walls. A surgical table sits in the middle of the room with the remains of a decrepit skeliton in wrist ankle and neck restraints.
GM:
A complicated device on one end of the table not only holds the head of the subject in place but also mounts several forceps and drill bits with which to perform operations on the skull.

Sun Chu Sing:
Skill Check 46 VS. Target Number 38 Failure!
GM:
An Autosurgeon unit, a device of spindly metal limbs is folded up on th eceiling. A medical cabinet and a set of large metal sinks complete the furnishings in this dismal room.

Reestheus:
These notes may have some clues
GM:

  • Reestheus looks at Stigatus and Atella.
  • Stigatus extends his hand
  • Atella walks to the notes and examines

Atella:
them

  • Reestheus steps away from the notes hand raised, quite done with them.
  • Stigatus reads the notes over Atella’s shoulders

Atella:
“hrmmmm”

Reestheus:
(Rorschach?)
You say to the GMs: has stuff on the map been blacked out?

Atella:
“Apparently Koronath Hekate was conducting experiments on the brains of his patients. It would seem that the experiments were not having the effect that he desired.”

  • Atella “I am surprised to see that he wanted to cure their respective madnesses.”

Stigatus:
“Was his desire not a collection of demented madmen?”

Reestheus:
Doesn’t seem like he ever found a cure…

Atella:
“After these failures, it would appear that he consigned these souls to their cells and their madness. He chose instead to studdy the planets.”

  • Atella looks to Stigatus. “It would appear not from these notes.”

Atella:
“Hrm, even more interesting, it would appear he has built a hidden cabinet into the library.”
There is a staircase in this room leading up into the north tower

Stigatus:
“I appriciate that these heretics were so rigorous in documenting their monsterous crimes against the empire”

  • Atella nods

Reestheus:
Should we keep clearing or head to the library?

Stigatus:
We have as well conclude our business in this wing

Reestheus:
I agree

  • Atella nods
    GM:
    What’s the virdict?
    GM:
    verdict

Commissar 314159:
“Though we can’t guarantee more spectres won’t appear from places we’ve been, we might as well see what’s above before backtracking to the library.”
The stairwell to this tower is crammed with scaps of metal, odd gears, chains and large wrist sized wire bungles. Several times while ascending, piles of toppled devris must be shuffled about
At the peak, a plain red door opens to reveal a turret topped, circular toom dominated by a model of the baraspine system.

Stigatus:
“Impressive”

Commissar 314159:
“Studied planets you said…”
A huge golden orb represents Baraspine’s sun, with the eleven planets of the system orbiting on gilded hoops.

  • Stigatus moves to examine the seventh planet from the sun
  • Atella examines the model closely
Each planet in the device is represented by a single human skull encased in a globe of tinted glass. The model is powered by a complex set of oversized clockwork gears set into the floor.
  • Reestheus leans in to inspect the metals used to create the model.
On the walls are elaborate murals of the night sky, the stars connected to form images of various constellations in the shape of mythical beats and heroes of Imperial history. A section of the domed roof looks like it slides aside to allow a large and ornate telescope to gaze upon the night sky.
A desk and bookcase form a place to work near the telescope. Though dust is heavy in the air, this room is largely intact and has not suffered as greatly from age as much as the rest of the cathedral.
    GM:
    fin
  • Reestheus wanders over to the telescope and takes a peak.
  • Commissar 314159 circles along the walls, looking for anything of note, taking the long way to the desk

Sun Chu Sing:
Skill Check 44 VS. Target Number 38 Failure!

  • Atella studies the model for some time, moving planets to various positions before speaking.

Atella:
“These planets can me moved into all manner of arcane configurations. Heretics might use this to plan for eclipses or other portents.”

  • Commissar 314159 ends up near the desk, glancing over the contents of the surface and through any drawers

Commissar 314159:
“What do the planets look like on the feast of Saint Drusus?”
GM:
The desk is covered in age yellowed papers and mad scribbles, constellations and planetary alignments

  • Reestheus tries to figure out the last thing Hekate was looking at through the telescope.

Commissar 314159:
“Sister, perhaps these papers might give you some insight into what particular alignments he was interested in? Or at least any that might have some bearing on our reason for being here.”

  • Atella is busy using the model to align various planets
You say to the GMs: no desk drawers?
    GM whispers: filled with papers

Commissar 314159:
“Hiver, see if you can find anything in this desk after you’re done playing around.”

  • Commissar 314159 turns his attention to the nearby bookcase, searching for any signs of any recently handled tomes, so to speak
  • Reestheus quickly stands up straight and walks over to the desk. “Um, right away.”
  • Stigatus examines the workings of the machine
  • Reestheus checks the various seems and joints of the desk for clues.
Atella continues to turn the model. Suddenly as she approaches an eclipse of the Seventh and Ninth planets the temperature in the room drops.

Commissar 314159:
“Psyker, what new warp devilry is this?”

  • Reestheus turns to look at what Atella is doing.
A voice begins to echo from the small desk near the telescope. A handsome, well dress man sits studying star charts. His skln is covered in hand drawn mathematical equasions.

Sun Chu Sing:
Skill Check 51 VS. Target Number 38 Failure!
GM:
“yes yes” he murmers

  • Reestheus jumps back from the desk.
  • Atella stops changing the model’s alignment and begins praying

Reestheus:
G-g-g-g-g….
GM:
It is as I thought. The stars them selves speak unto us! There… the secrets are to be found!
GM:
All the truths of the galaxy can be found in the stars!
The section of the roof above slides open and a yellowish light bleeds into the room. as if all the stars were turning their gaze on the Planetarium. Koronath Hekate turns to see you staring at him

  • Commissar 314159 slowly rotates his body from the bookcase, staring at the back of the new spectre
  • Reestheus slowly moves his hands to his rifle.

Stigatus:
public service announcement

Koronath Hekate:
No!

Stigatus:
The new hitman game that just came out will be $10 on steam this weekend

  • Reestheus freezes

Koronath Hekate:
Theeclipse of the seventh and ninth worlds is not duw for another five thousand years! How dare you interrupt my studies? Do you have any idea what I am about to accomplish here? Do you? Well? Do you?

Stigatus:
“I do not”

Atella:
“We do not. Are you helping your clan mates in their heresy?”

Reestheus:
Do they know they’re… you know…. dead?

Koronath Hekate:
There is no heresy here! Only a search for pure knowledge! The secrets to everthing is at our fingertips
My cattle like relatives have no interest in what we can learn here! Dullards one and all

Commissar 314159:
“Are you responsible for their fate?”

Atella:
“What do you believe will happen on the elipse of the seventh and ninth worlds?”

Koronath Hekate:
I leave them to reap what they have sewn. Someday I will have all of the answers! I have to look harder!

Koronath Hekate:
Ah! So you can see it too! During this configuration we will see the saint in triumph and the sword will be in the 8th house! Yes!
Koronath begins to trail off, mubling to himself

Commissar 314159:
“If you’ll have all the answers, what is the one question you’ll begin with?”

Koronath Hekate:
How does it work?! Why does it fit? What is the cause?

Commissar 314159:
“What is it?”

  • Reestheus looks around for a possible ambush.

Commissar 314159:
“If you seek the cause, do you know the effect?”

Koronath Hekate:
But I can see that you… you are not like the others oh no! You can see the value of my work!

  • Koronath Hekate feverishly begins writing equasions on the papers in front of him

Commissar 314159:
“What is the Dei-Phage?”

Koronath Hekate:
The Dei Page?! You’ve heard of this name too?

Commissar 314159:
“I hear rumors.”

Koronath Hekate:
I’ve scoured the heavens looking for answers to explaining it’s influnece. but the whipsers are strong… His voice…

Atella:
“His voice speaks to you?”

Koronath Hekate:
There’s so much we dont know and I’ve looked so hard! If I can just discover…

Commissar 314159:
“Do you know of his… Hand?”

Koronath Hekate:
His voice is everywhere

Commissar 314159:
“Do you know the next marker?”

Atella:
“Do you know of the things your siblings have done?”

Koronath Hekate:
I care little for the uneducated antics of my family. They care only for their own experience. No desire for knowledge! No spark! Hardly better than animals. I tried to fix them but no! The answers were not there.

Stigatus:
“What does the mechanicus have to do with any of this”

  • Stigatus holds up the pieces of the gear symbol key

Commissar 314159:
“Are they connected to the Black Sepulchre?”

Koronath Hekate:
The Sepulhre! What is inside? Could it be the key?

Commissar 314159:
“The key to the haemetite cathedral?”
You say to the GMs: brb

Koronath Hekate:
The key to everything! The stars hold the answer

Koronath Hekate:
Perhaps… but no…. Perhaps I’ve learned all I can here

Commissar 314159:
“You are not bound here?”

Koronath Hekate:
This is my study, I want for nothing with my tools here

Commissar 314159:
“What were you looking at in your telescope?”

Koronath Hekate:
Answers! I must have the answers!

Atella:
“Ask us your questions.”

Atella:
“we will provide answers.”

Atella:

Atella:
Skill Check 51 VS. Target Number 32 Failure!

Atella:

Koronath Hekate:
No No!
looks frustrated

  • Koronath Hekate loosk frustrated
  • Koronath Hekate slams his hands on the desk

Koronath Hekate:
perhaps i was wrong. Perhaps you are nothing more than a distraction

Commissar 314159:
“Were your patients downstairs a distraction?”

Commissar 314159:
“Didn’t you turn to the stars so that you could help them?”

Koronath Hekate:
I thought I could cure their madness but now I know that it nothing could be done for them

Commissar 314159:
“Not even your answers?”

Koronath Hekate:
The more radical my experements on their brains the more mad they became

Stigatus:
“What is it about this place that drives them to such madness”
Atella is disconnected.
Atella has connected.

Reestheus:
(GIVE ME BACK MY SON!)

Reestheus:
Are you moving the bodies downstairs?

Reestheus:
Or is someone else here?

Commissar 314159:
“Do you have any questions about the Black Sepulchre?”

Koronath Hekate:
It is old and powerful. A great weapon in the hand of the Emperor. What it is escapes my eye but the stars! We must see the stars to know the answer

Koronath Hekate:
Cant you see? Or are you like all the others as I feared

Commissar 314159:
I see the importance of the seventh planet.

Koronath Hekate:
yes yes… The Seventh planet reaches it zenith and when the 2nd moon is full some truth will be revealed.

Commissar 314159:
“When time stops, will we achieve immortality?”

Stigatus:
Skill Check 47 VS. Target Number 45 Failure!

  • Reestheus wishes he stayed in school.

Stigatus:
Skill Check 57 VS. Target Number 0 Failure!

Koronath Hekate:
Of course! I had not considered before the pauccity of knowledge I can gain here. There is nothing in this place for me but madness and dust. I shall ascend from here, I shall leave this place and seek what I can beyond the veil! Farewell, my friends. Perhaps we shall meet again, in that future where all knowledge has melted to one truth!
Kornath’s body rots awayt, along with the strange starlight and the roof grinds closed. In the seat is a small metal fragment

Stigatus:
“There is no greater quest then the search for knowledge, but temper well your will”

  • Stigatus retreavers the metal fragment
  • Reestheus visibly relaxes.

Stigatus:
“As I suspected”

  • Stigatus holds aloft the missing fragment

Reestheus:
(Zelda noise)

Commissar 314159:
“The key is assembled now?”

  • Stigatus Combines the fragments of the cog

Stigatus:
“It is complete, and soon too, our search here”
Reestheus is disconnected.

Commissar 314159:
“Quite, the sooner we are out of the Haemetite Cathedral, the easier I will breathe.”
Reestheus has connected.

Stigatus:
“The hecates were a symptom, not a cause, I suspect the root of this madness lies behind the door near the cannon”

Commissar 314159:
“Unfortunately I suspect you are correct.”

Stigatus:
Skill Check 13 VS. Target Number 18 Success!

Stigatus:
“interesting”

  • Stigatus examines the book

Stigatus:
“More of this man’s seeming nonesense, perhaps the complete collection”

Stigatus:
“I shall endevor to study it when time permits”

Stigatus:
“3 phial of unknown substances, and a pistol”

  • Stigatus secrets the items into the folds of his robes

Commissar 314159:
“Curious, be cautious with those phials.”

  • Stigatus stands up, and heads for the stairs
you return to the nave and approach the clock

Stigatus:
“My body contains numerous caustic, toxic and even a few explosive chemicals commissar, I am no stranger to being careful”

Reestheus:
Why do I have a bad feeling about this?

Commissar 314159:
“Any of your compents warp tainted?”

Stigatus:
“All of my components are blessed by the machine god, and rigorously maintained, If anything were to fall to the tain of the warp Commissar, it would be the bits of me that are organic in nature”

  • Stigatus inserts the key into the recess

Commissar 314159:
“Same as any tool.”
The key snaps into place and instantly the clock chimes a single time

  • Reestheus readies his rifle.
  • Atella stands to the side praying and pacing

Stigatus:
“Let us see what secrets my order has hidden away here”
A deep audible clunk and the entire front of the clock pops forward an inch with a visible hiss of gas.

  • Commissar 314159 folds his arms behind his back and observes intently
  • Stigatus pulls the clock face open
  • Reestheus starts to bite his nails.
Inside is a deep black shaft of ribbed steel like a negative cast of a spine. Irsted handholds lead downwards intot he blackness. The smell of oil and rust reaches you on the faint breeze from below, along with the sound of grinding machinery.
  • Commissar 314159 rummages around once against for his lamp, and holds it aloft, trying to gain the maximum benefit of it’s light
  • Stigatus seems to sniff for a moment before flutes open on his rebreather and he inhales deeply, a shuddering wheeze escaping him
  • Stigatus decends into the darkness
the bottom of the shaft appears to contain a pool of brown fetid water and some sort of floating brown gunk

Stigatus:
Skill Check 88 VS. Target Number 33 Failure!

Reestheus:
Is he ok?

  • Stigatus splash

Stigatus:
yells back up “Watch your step”

  • Stigatus advances towards the door
  • Commissar 314159 proceeds with extreme caution down the stairs

Sun Chu Sing:
(I have to bail for the night, have to be up early tomorrow.)

  • Reestheus follows the others.

Sun Chu Sing:
(Post/email me a log)
Sing is disconnected.
Atella:
i know this is exciting
Atella:
but can we pick it up from here next time?

Reestheus:

Stigatus:
reestheus is used to being up to his ears in shit

  • Reestheus surfaces and gasps.
  • Stigatus opens the door

Commissar 314159:
“Does any of thismake sense to you Stigatus?”

  • Reestheus shakes off as much as he can and approaches the door.

Commissar 314159:
“Have you encountered such alcoves?”

Reestheus:
I can try to open it

Atella:
Skill Check 90 VS. Target Number 32 Failure!

Stigatus:
“I assume it is the maintenece hatch for the cannon… or perhaps the sewers….”

Atella:

Stigatus:
“Perhaps both”

  • Reestheus curses as the panel gives off a very rude beeping noise.

Atella:
with a crash, Atella falls into the fetid water

  • Atella stands and drench in the water, prays
  • Commissar 314159 makes his way over to Reestheus, and examines the panel, looking where to wedge his monoknife for leverage

Stigatus:
“We’ll have to pry it open”

Stigatus:
“See what you can find to assist”

  • Reestheus nods.
  • Stigatus wedges a long bar into the door and pushes
you find a bar that you think will work as a prybar

Stigatus:
Skill Check 29 VS. Target Number 25 Failure!

  • Reestheus grabs the bar to help out.
  • Atella snaps out of it and helps try to pry the door

you pry the door open together and inside there is a small room lit by a single glowing green bar shaped bulb. As the door opens several flamebearer (torch) servitors detach themselves from their alcoves along the ceiling and flit to a position next to each member of the cadre.
